Our Story: Falling in Love With Maltese Dogs
Located, along with our Maltese
puppies, near Branson, Missouri
after retiring to the MidWest from
California.
You will find Storybook Maltese located near Branson MO, formerly located in the rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California. We have been blessed with fabulous Maltese from some of the top Champions in the USA. Having owned many dogs over the span of our lives, we are convinced that the Maltese dog is truly the most magnificent dog on Earth. Our special little Maltese puppies are raised for Show, Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, & Pets. All of our dogs live in our house with us as part of our family and though they each have their own roomy pen complete with a soft bed, Potty Pad, food, water, toys etc., they really don’t spend much time in their pens, and can normally be found perching on our laps or at our feet if we are doing errands around the house. Each puppy has its own special personality and we love each one very much. To tell the truth, they are spoiled rotten. Many times we’ve had people tell us that when they die, they’d like to come back as one of our dogs. It’s very important to us to find homes for our Maltese puppies that will be just as loving as the home they were born in. Our dogs were ‘working dogs’ in that we took them to work with us every day before our retirement. Not all at once, of course, but on a rotation basis. The ‘Maltese of the Day’ got to come to work and be an Office Maltese, greeting clients and helping to manage our stress levels. All of our Maltese are very well socialized. We start our Maltese puppies out the same way as they are intended to become special pets for special people. We train them early to be content riding around in a purse/carrier, which comes very naturally to the Maltese Breed. Maltese are very susceptible to separation anxiety and are intended to be with someone that can be with them most of the time and this is the kind of Maltese puppy buyer that we are willing to let one of our precious Maltese puppies go home with. Although I fell in love with my first Maltese at age 10 and wanted one desperately my whole life, I waited until I was in a position that allowed me to give appropriate time and attention to the dog before acquiring my first Maltese. We do not sell puppies to homes where our puppies will be left alone all day as the Maltese is the ultimate companion dog and must be with you to be happy, healthy and content. This is the very quality that makes them so perfect for work as Therapy Dogs and Medical Service Dogs. All of our Maltese are AKC registered. All Maltese puppies are sold with a spay/neuter agreement and will not leave our home until at least age 12 weeks. If we do not currently have any available Maltese puppies, we are able to refer you to one of our many friends that may also have a top quality Maltese puppy available. Our breeding program is based on outstanding and diverse bloodlines. The Storybook lineage is a brilliant culmination of well-respected lines full of Champion after Champion for generations. We have great respect and admiration for each of the amazing contributors to the Storybook line. It is a privilege and honor to carry on the many decades of hard work that are behind the Storybook Maltese line. It is with sincere gratitude that we strive onward to maintain and improve upon this work. A great deal of thought and consideration is given to each breeding. Great care is taken when we produce Maltese puppies. Our personal goals are listed here in order of importance to us personally. We love to win in the ring, of course, but at the end of the day, that dog in the ring is going to come home and be someone’s companion.Health
Wouldn’t it be just terrible to bring your Maltese puppy home, fall in love with her, and then suddenly lose her to some health issue? Health is always our first priority. While we don’t have a crystal ball, we do everything in our power to insure we produce healthy puppies including proper nutrition, vet exam, vaccinations and deworming and only breeding DNA health tested parents.Temperament
We live with these little dogs. They’re a part of our everyday lives, piling on our laps in the evening and at our heels following us around the house all day. They require a great deal of grooming, whether clipped or kept in coat. If the dog is neurotic, fidgety, won’t be still to be groomed, is overly possessive and snarls, bites, or barks incessantly, eats it’s own feces and leaves you wondering why you ever wanted a Maltese puppy, it’s highly likely the dog will end up in a shelter. Temperament is extremely important and because many of our puppies grow up to become therapy dogs and service dogs, it’s more important than ever that they have correct Maltese temperament. According to the AKC Maltese Breed Standard for all his diminutive size, the Maltese seems to be without fear. His trust and affectionate responsiveness are very appealing. He is among the gentlest mannered of all little dogs, yet he is lively and playful as well as vigorous. Correct temperament is, at least here at Storybook Maltese, ranked higher in importance than the other factors.Overall Appearance
Every time we look at our dogs, our hearts flutter. They’re just so beautiful and alluring. Our personal preference is a shorter muzzle with larger eyes that give that ‘baby doll’ look that captures the heart. Whenever it won’t jeopardize our higher priorities, we strive toward this particular ‘look’.Structure
Correct structure is especially important in regard to the health of toy dogs to help minimize common health issues such as Patellar Luxation.Coat
Certainly, the coat plays a very significant role in the Maltese show ring. According to AKC Maltese Breed Standard, The coat is single, that is, without undercoat. It hangs long, flat, and silky over the sides of the body almost, if not quite, to the ground. When it comes to everyday grooming, a great coat will make life easier for both owner and dog.Size
AKC Maltese Breed Standard dictates size to be 4-7 lbs with 4- 6 lbs being preferred. Most of the families that we place our puppies with do not want a very large Maltese of 8-20 lbs, as we’ve seen in some places. We also do not strive to breed ultra tiny micro pocket puppies of 2-3 lbs. The tiny teacup version of Maltese is usually plagued with health issues. Occasionally, we have a pup that will be on the smaller side. These pups require a special home to survive and thrive and extra care is taken to make sure they go to a home where they’ll be properly cared for. We will never breed a dog that doesn’t conform to the breed standard and therefore, all Storybook Maltese fall within the acceptable range.Pigmentation
Finally, part of the ‘whole package’ that makes up a stunningly beautiful Maltese is the black nose, eyes, and mouth and pads. It is an important part of the whole, however, it has no affect on the more important matters of health and temperament, structure and coat and that is why it’s at the bottom of the list of importance. One look at our dogs and puppies will show our strength in this area as well.
Our Maltese Journey Begins
My Maltese journey began as a 10 year old girl when I first laid eyes on our neighbors Maltese. She was as sweet as she was beautiful. From that moment on, I watched every dog show on TV, suffering though all the other breeds until, at last, the Maltese graced the screen. I dreamed of having one of my own someday. The day finally came 30 years later when my children were raised and I could afford a Maltese and I was on the hunt for my long awaited Maltese puppy. What I found is that quality, well bred, AKC Maltese puppies aren’t very easy to find. I felt very determined NOT to support a ‘Puppy Mill’. Finally, I had my first Maltese puppy. All the time I’d spent waiting, I read book after book on Maltese dogs and how to care for them. They all warned of various difficulties and special considerations, but I was prepared. Over prepared! As the days went by I kept waiting for some issue or problem to arise. Where was the difficulty? Where were the struggles? The difficulties never came. In fact...this was the easiest dog I had ever owned in my life! We then became obsessed with this amazing little creature known as the Maltese Dog and our journey continued from there to evolve into more than we could have ever imagined. We now enjoy competing in AKC Conformation shows and striving to improve the breed with our dedicated breeding program. When we produce a litter of puppies, it is for the sole purpose of continuing to develop our lines and improve the breed. Nearly all of the puppies we produce would compete quite nicely in the show ring and we must choose the best of the best to keep. The others, we offer as outstanding pets to only the most excellent homes. When our puppies reach their new homes, they are groom trained, potty pad trained, and purse/carrier trained to help insure a smooth transition.
